Why compress an image before uploading it?
Photos straight off a phone or camera are often several megabytes each, but most websites, forms, and email attachments only need a fraction of that to look sharp. Uploading a 4000-pixel-wide photo to a profile picture field wastes bandwidth on both ends and slows down the page it ends up on. Resizing to a sensible width and compressing the output usually cuts file size by 70–90% with no visible quality loss.

Move the quality slider down for a smaller file, or up if you start to notice compression artifacts. JPEG and WEBP support a quality setting; PNG is always lossless, so its size depends only on the resize.
JPEG vs. WEBP vs. PNG
JPEG is the safest choice for compatibility and usually gives the smallest file for photos. WEBP typically compresses even smaller at the same visual quality and is supported by all modern browsers. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, but produces much larger files for photos — it's best reserved for screenshots, logos, or images that need a transparent background.
