How this calculator works

Enter the original price, the discount percentage, and the sales tax rate that applies to your purchase. The discount is applied first to get the price you're actually being charged, and sales tax is then calculated on that discounted amount — matching how checkout math works at most US retailers, since you owe tax on what you paid, not the original sticker price.

Sales tax rates vary by state, county, and city, so there's no single "US rate" to default to. The quick-pick buttons above are a few common reference points — check your receipt or a state Department of Revenue site for the exact rate where you're shopping.

Worked example

An $80 item with a 20% discount and 8% sales tax: the discount takes $16 off, bringing the price to $64. Sales tax on that $64 is $5.12, for a final total of $69.12 — still $10.88 less than the original $80 price plus tax would have been, since the tax itself is smaller on the discounted amount.

Frequently asked questions

Is the discount applied before or after tax?

Before. This calculator applies the discount to the original price first, then calculates sales tax on the already-discounted price — which is how sales tax is calculated at checkout almost everywhere in the US, since tax is owed on what you actually paid, not the sticker price.

Why isn't there a preset list of every state's sales tax rate?

Sales tax varies not just by state but by county and city, and rates change over time, so a hardcoded state list would go stale and could show you the wrong number with false confidence. The quick-pick buttons cover a few common reference rates, but check your receipt or your state's Department of Revenue site for your exact local rate.

Can I use this for a discount without any tax, or tax without any discount?

Yes — leave either field at 0. Set the discount to 0% to calculate sales tax on the full price, or set the tax rate to 0% to see just the discounted price.

Does this work offline?

Yes — the math is simple percentage arithmetic done in your browser, so it keeps working without an internet connection once loaded.
