How umbrella coverage is sized
Umbrella policies sit on top of your auto and home liability coverage, picking up where those limits end — and they're sold in $1 million increments. A common rule of thumb is to carry umbrella coverage at least equal to your net worth, since that's roughly what a judgment could put at risk in a serious lawsuit. This calculator rounds your net worth up to the nearest $1 million and adds another $1 million for every two risk factors you check, since things like rental property, teen drivers, or frequently hosting guests measurably raise your odds of a liability claim.
Underlying limits matter too
Most insurers require your underlying auto and home liability limits to be reasonably high — often at least $250,000/$500,000 for auto and $300,000 for home — before they'll write an umbrella policy on top. If your current limits are below that, raising them is usually the first (and often cheap) step before adding an umbrella policy.
