YouTube image sizes, explained
A video thumbnail should be exactly 1280×720 (16:9) — YouTube requires a minimum width of 640px and recommends 1280×720 for it to look sharp at every player size. Channel art (the banner across the top of a channel page) uploads at 2560×1440, but only the middle 1546×423 “safe area” is guaranteed to show on every device — TV, desktop, and mobile all crop the wide canvas differently. The channel profile picture is 800×800 and displays as a circle.
Pick a format above, drag to reposition, and download at the exact size — entirely in your browser, nothing ever uploaded.
Thumbnail tips
- High-contrast subjects and readable text at small sizes tend to perform best in search and suggested results, where thumbnails render tiny.
- Leave the bottom-right corner relatively clear — YouTube overlays the video duration there.
- For channel art, keep logos and text inside the 1546×423 safe area so nothing gets clipped on TVs or phones.
